Gerry Reid says he always gets a good feeling when he visits the district of Fortune Bay-Cape La Hune.
The leader of the provincial Liberals and leader of the opposition visited the Coast of Bays region last week and got a chance to talk to local people about the issues facing the district with less then two weeks until voters go to the ballot box.
Mr. Reid says the fishery is what's going to sustain rural Newfoundland for the long-term and he believes the current government has let the region and the province down. Premier Williams has paid no attention to the traditional fishery he said and he wants to put it back on the radar screen.
"I'd be prepared to invest in the fishery. For example, if a fish harvester wants to go out and fish an underutilized species we'd be prepared to invest with him in the venture. We'd be prepared, either through tax breaks or cash incentives to help him with that."
He said they'd also be prepared to help if someone wanted to come to the region and do some secondary processing.
"We'd be prepared to put cash into that too because I think that it's a worthwhile investment and that it would pay off in the end. I'd be prepared to take a gamble on the fishery like the premier is prepared to take the gamble in the oil industry. At least I know that the fishing industry is going to be there long after the oil industry is gone."
