MHA Tracey Perry involved in car accident print this article

Tracey Perry, the MHA for the district of Fortune Bay-Cape La Hune, spent a night at the St. John's Health Sciences Centre following a motor vehicle accident on Wednesday, March 5.

Ms. Perry was in the passenger seat when the driver of the vehicle, Cletus MacDonald, swerved to avoid debris on the highway just outside of the province's capital city. Mr. MacDonald lost control of the vehicle, which ended up flipping before coming to a halt. The Jaws of Life had to be used to transport Ms. Perry from the Vehicle.

The local MHA suffered a head laceration with about six staples and a fractured C7 vertebra. According to www.medicinenet.com, C7 is the symbol for the seventh cervical (neck) vertebral bone (C7), which is sometimes called the prominent vertebra due to the length of its spinous process (the projection off the back of the vertebral body). The spinous process of the top thoracic vertebra (T1) just below C7 is sometimes even more prominent than that of the "prominent vertebra."

It's reported that Mr. MacDonald suffered cuts and bruises in the accident.

"She's pretty beaten up, actually," said Carolyn Collier, constituency assistant to Ms. Perry.

Despite some pretty significant injuries, Ms. Collier said that the MHA was in positive spirits last week when the two spoke over the telephone. Ms. Perry was also very aware of how lucky she is to be alive.

"We're very happy to be alive and to have a guardian angel," said Ms. Perry in a statement. "I want to thank the people that stopped, the people that called the ambulance and stayed with us until the fire brigade and ambulance arrived."

"We're all thankful that she's ok and definitely blessed that she walked out of that alive," said Ms. Collier.

Ms. Perry was on her way to St. John's for the opening of the House of Assembly (which was Monday, March 10) and other meetings. It wasn't clear last Thursday if she would still attend the opening.
