The Harbour Breton Hurricanes Atoms skated to a bronze medal in the Atoms Mega Tournament that was hosted by Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador during Easter.

The biggest hockey event ever hosted by Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador included 20 teams from all regions of the island portion of the province and from Labrador.

All teams played in the preliminary round to determine which category they would play in for possible medals.

Following the first round of play the Hurricanes Atoms were ranked in ninth place and continued play in Division C with teams from Churchill Falls, the Twin Towns (Port Saunders and Port aux Choix and a team from the Northern Peninsula (the Straits).

While the Atoms had a record of 1 and 2 in the second round of play, they were awarded the bronze medal over Churchill Falls as they had a better overall record than the boys from Labrador. Only the top two teams in the five divisions following the preliminary round played for the gold and silver medal as the tournament included 55 hockey games.

Coach Terry Baker said, Our players had a fantastic tournament and were really pleased with their overall performance. It was a good experience for us which will help make us a better team. We had great parental support during the event and strong moral support from the Harbour Breton Minor Hockey Association as well. Were all looking forward to being back playing hockey in the 2012-2013 program.
