On December 28th and 29th, six teams played hockey at the Rec Plex in St. Alban’s. Players of all ages registered from the Bay d’Espoir and played excellent games, showed great sportsmanship and got lots of exercise.
A number of "Old Boys" participated in this year's hockey tournament as well as the young ones, and friendly competition was well delivered by all participants. The Christmas Cup hockey tournament is a very popular seasonal event. It's popular because it's a happy time of year.
There were two tournaments throughout the weekend that went under different catergories. The 35 and under had three teams registered which consisted off the Mustard Tigers, Morrisiville Select and the Dylan Pack. The 35 and over consisted of the Aubrey Joe team, Rex Drew and the Vancor.
The division A champs were the Mustard Tigers and they played against the Morrisiville Select with the final scores being 5-2.
The division B champs were the Aubrey Joe team and they played off against the Vancor team. The winning scores were 8-3.
Great games were played all and the tournament was a huge success with the total raised being $1870.00
Gail Hoskins, chair of the committee was overwhelmed with the support from parents, players and volunteers who assisted in putting this two day event together and helping out where needed.
The players are really dedicated to putting their best effort into the games but the enjoyment, fun and to be able to help the minor hockey continue in Bay d’Espoir is what attracts them to these tournaments. Matthew Bennett was awarded the Glen Barnes Memorial Award after the championship game for his show of great sportsmanship.
The funds raised from this event went to the Minor Hockey association to assist with cost of extra jerseys and supplies needed throughout the year.
According to Gail Hoskins, "The tournament just keeps getting better and busier each year as many people look forward to participating in the games during the Christmas season and all are invited to return again.”
