The Bay d’Espoir Academy Predators saw their five year reign as senior boys’ 3A softball champs come to a crashing end on September 25 as they were defeated by Point Leamington boys in a regional tournament hosted by St. Anne’s in Conne River.
In addition to the host team, players from King Academy, Harbour Breton; Point Leamington Academy, Point Leamington and Bay d’Espoir Academy, Milltown-Head of Bay d’Espoir saw action in the exciting event.
The fast-paced tournament provided plenty of action with all teams giving it their best shots. The standings following regular round play saw Point Leamington in first place with Bay d’Espoir Academy, King Academy and St. Anne’s in second, third and fourth places respectively.
The championship game came down to an exciting contest between the Predators and the Bulldogs from Point Leamington Academy.
Despite being in a rebuilding phase the Predators kept the game close with the score being 3 to 3 going into the seventh inning.
However, in the top of the final inning the Bulldogs put on their game faces and scored seven runs to make the score 10 to 3. The Predators gave it a great effort in the bottom of the inning but the troops failed to rally and ended up losing their five-year regional softball crown.
Shawn Follow, the coach of the Predators, said, “We had a very successful run in this sport, but right now we’re in a rebuilding stage. That’s not to take anything away from the Bulldogs as they played well and deserved to win. However, we have a good young team coming on steam, and we’ll be back to avenge the loss in 2011.”
