The 83rd Tely 10 held in St. John’s July 25 was an incredible event. It was even more so for Harbour Breton’s own Beulah Drake who was smack in the middle of the entire hoopla.
Beulah Drake was one of 2700 runners and the only participant from Harbour Breton, and possibly the entire Coast of Bays region. She has been running for years and last summer she committed to doing her first Tely 10 as a challenge for herself.
Drake was inspired to participate in the 2010 Tely 10 by her friend Angela Skinner who was visiting Harbour Breton in 2009.
“Angela said that she was going to participate in the 2010 event and suggested that I do it with her. From July of last year to the race this July I had this event in mind and trained hard to compete.” Drake said.
“It’s a chance of a life time and the adrenaline rush is unreal. When I finished in 91 minutes I could still have run a few more miles as I wasn’t tired at all”.
The whole experience was an accomplishment and she made many memories for herself. She has a lot to be proud of by completing this race. She went at her own pace and felt good when she finished.
“The spectators kept me going,” said Drake. “All the way there was people with posters and cheering us on”. Mayor Denise O’Keefe even slapped her on the hands as congratulations.
“If you run you should definitely take this on,” said Drake. “This is one of the most exciting things I’ve done in my life, and I’d recommend that all runners participate in the event at least once.”
The Tely 10 is a great experience and a goal to work towards. It can give you a sense of pride when you complete it and many memories to share. It’s a chance to meet different people in a familiar place and to feel like you’re a part of something big.
Drake said, “I had a great time in the 2010 event, and my sister Tracey wants me to enter with her in 2011 so it looks like I’ll be among the participants again next year.”
The Tely 10 is a 10-mile race in which people from all across the country join in to promote fitness and well-being.
