On Saturday, Jan. 17, the first annual Daffodil Place darts tournament was held at the Milltown Lions Community Centre.
Daffodil Place is being constructed in St. John's and will offer rooms, meals, support and privacy to individuals and families who are experiencing cancer. As the Daffodil Place motto says, "A place to call home when it means the most" reaches out to many in our province. The idea to host a fundraiser for this cause took route at a Lions meeting in the fall and came to life at 9 a.m. that Saturday morning when 14 dart teams started play.
The support for such a worthwhile cause was evident by the communities being represented. Teams came from Belleoram, St. Alban's, Conne River and Milltown. Each team consisted of three women and three men and judging by the volume of cheering during the day and the enthusiasm of the players, the day was thoroughly enjoyed by practically everyone.
The winners from two divisions faced off around 3:30 p.m. At the end of the day the winning team of Terry and Mary Jane Crant, Howard Kearley and Christa Willcott, and Rose and Ed Collier walked away with the bragging rights as winners of the first Daffodil darts. Howard threw the winning dart. Runners up were a team from St. Alban's whose members included Nelson and Sheila Wheaton, Roland and Tina McDonald, and Junior and Erin Collier.
At the end of the day the Milltown Lions Club, with the help of all the dart players, came up with a $1,000 donation to Daffodil Place. The club thanks all who participated and helped with the many jobs during the day, which are so important to having a successful venture. By all accounts, next year's tournament will be larger and hopefully the gift to Daffodil Place will be even more impressive. To this end the organizers of the event ask all communities and dart players to keep this worthwhile venture in mind and think about a team you would enter next year. Remember, it's never too early to plan.
