Two former residents of the Coast of Bays will be part of a 13 member Canadian Navy team that will ‘Run the Rock’ from Port aux Basques to St. John’s in June.
Jody Baker of Harbour Breton and Jordan Skinner of Gaultois will be a part of the 2012 team that will raise funds that will go The Children’s Wish Foundation of Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Chapter.
On June 7, 2012, the 13 crew members of the HMCS St. John’s will dip their feet in the water off Port aux Basques on June 7 and begin a 10 day, 912 km run towards the province’s capital city for the 17th annual event.
Baker and Skinner said that they are looking forward to their participation in the 2012 run.
Jody Baker, Petty Officer, 2nd Class, has been with the Canadian Navy for 12 years and is a naval electronic sensors operator.
Baker, who also participated in the run in 2006, said, “This is obviously such a great cause that I just wanted to help out again this year. Three children in Harbour Breton alone have had wishes granted from the Children’s Wish Foundation, so this is important to me personally.”
Baker said that he is up to the 2012 challenge and has trained rigorously for the event.
“I put a special onus on training this time around to the point where’ve I’ve dropped 30 pounds for the event. It’s been all worth it as this run makes you feel very good at the end of the day”, Baker said.
Any resident of the Coast of Bays area who may want to help Jody raise money fro the Canadian Wish Foundation may contact Mayor Eric Skinner in Harbour Breton.
Jordan Skinner has been with the Canadian Navy for four years. He currently ranks as a Leading Seaman and is weapons engineering technician.
Skinner said, “I heard so much about the ‘Run the Rock’ project that I decided to try out for the event this year. I really want to help out in the great cause and I’m looking forward to the challenge.
“I realize it’s going to be tough out there, but knowing we’re raising funds for such a great program will be motivation enough for me.”
