As of 4 p.m. Saturday afternoon firefighters are continuing to fight a large forest fire burning near the community of Seal Cove, Fortune Bay.

The blaze is about one kilometer from the community in an area where there are no cabins or homes.

Local firefighters and fire suppression staff with the Department of Natural Resources are on scene. Two water bombers and one helicopter have also been brought in.

The helicopter had been on its own for part of the day as weather conditions kept the bombers from taking off from Gander. However, conditions cleared in the afternoon enough for the planes to take off.
