Nalcor Energy is moving ahead with road construction and site clearing at the Muskrat Falls generating site. Work will start next week and continue into the fall.
The work is part of preparing for the construction of the dam at Muskrat Falls — part of the Lower Churchill hydro project.
According to Nalcor, a contract for snow clearing has already been awarded to Shukapesh Construction Limited, while Nukum Forestry Ltd. is to be awarded a contract for road work. Both contractors are Innu companies and Nalcor states their involvement reflects statements made within Nalcor's Impacts and Benefits Agreement with the Labrador Innu.
“Starting this work now enables us to take advantage of the 2012 summer work season in Labrador, and provides the ability to move ahead with construction activities in a timely and efficient manner in the event project sanction is achieved,” stated Ed Martin, president and CEO of Nalcor.
Company awards site clearing and road contracts -
He called the awarding of the contracts “prudent,” pointing to “the financial savings to be gained by preventing the delay when a sanction decision occurs.”
Martin referred to the work as “preparatory activities.”
Martin also noted that an asset like the road will be a benefit regardless of the timing of sanction.
