Corporal Sheldon Hynes of the RCMP Detachment in Harbour Breton has been nominated for the Crime Stoppers RCMP Police Officer of the Year.
Cst. Hynes, originally from Embree, NL, has been an RCMP officer for the past eleven years. He served with the force in Alberta for 9 years and has been with the RCMP in Habour Breton since 2010.
Sergeant Vicki Chalker of Crime Stoppers said that Cst. Hynes was nominated by two individuals who noted that Cst. Hynes ‘makes the local detachment a very positive place to work and provides great morale in the work environment’.
Cst. Hynes said that he is honoured to be nominated for the prestigious honour.
He said, “I certainly appreciate the fact that someone thought enough about me to make this nomination. I’m humbled by it all in knowing that there are many police officers out there who are just as deserving, or more deserving, of the nomination.”
Cst. Hynes said that he would make every effort to attend the event, which is scheduled to be held at the Capital Hotel in St. John’s on January 25.
Shortly following the special event, Cst. Hynes will be leaving his Harbour Breton posting as he has been promoted to serve as a Sergeant at the RCMP Major Crimes Division in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
The Crime Stoppers Police Officer of the Year is sponsored by the VOCM Cares Foundation.
Cst Hynes will be up for the honour with two other RCMP officers – Corporal Darren Stevens out of Bell Island and Cst. Darryl; MacMullin in Natuashish.
The three finalists for the RNC Officer of the Year include Cst. John Tupin and Sgt. Jason Sheppard from the Northeast Avalon Division and Constable Perry Priddle from Churchill Falls.
