If you enjoy walking (or even if you don’t) and would like to help fund research projects that hopefully will find a cure for cancer, then the Canadian Cancer Society is inviting you to participate in the 5th annual Canadian Cancer Society’s South Coast Relay for Life.

Denise Whittle is the chairperson of the 2010 relay, which is scheduled to be held at the Connaigre Arena in Harbour Breton on Saturday, October 2 from 5 pm to 5 am.

Whittle said that as of August 23 five teams had registered to participate in the event.

She said, “The South Coast Relay for Life is a great cause, and I’m sure more teams will have come forward by October 2 to participate. Funds raised through a Relay for Life are used to fund cancer research projects, provide information services and support programs, including Daffodil Place, as well as advocate for public policies that prevent cancer and help those living with it.”

Whittle said that the organizing committee would like to see more volunteers come forward to help organize the 2010 event.

Interested volunteers can contact Denise Whittle at 885-2153 or Jean Sheppard at 885-6312 or Lorraine Bambury at 665-3191.

In addition, cancer survivors in the Coast of Bays who wish to attend the event this year should contact Denise as soon as possible.

Anyone wishing to place a luminary in the 2010 relay is asked to contact Luminary Chair, Shelia Lambert at 885-2452.  Luminaries are candles that are placed in special bags that bear the names of the cancer survivors and loved ones who have lost their battle with cancer. The luminaries are lit during a twilight ceremony and then line the track to provide light and inspiration to the participants.

The Canadian Cancer Society’s Relay for Life is a nation wide non-competitive relay where teams of approximately 10 people raise money and take turns walking, running or strolling around a track to help make cancer history.
