Cst. Joe Lawlor of the RCMP Detachment in Harbour Breton said that drivers need to wear their seat belts and watch their speed when operating a vehicle.
Cst. Lawlor was referring to a single vehicle accident that happened at about 5:45 pm on August 18 on Route 362 just 1 km past the Pool’s Cove turn-off on the Harbour Breton Highway.
There were five people in the vehicle that, apparently, was heading back to Harbour Breton.
While none of the occupants received serious injuries it was apparent, according to Cst. Lawlor, that the use of seat belts by four of the five occupants played a major role in preventing more serious harm in the incident.
The occupant not wearing a seat belt suffered lacerations to his head and legs and was taken to the hospital in Grand Falls-Windsor as a precautionary measure. However, he was back in Harbour Breton on Thursday, August 19.
Cst Lawlor said, “Given my experience, I would say that speed was probably a factor in the incident. Drivers need to pay careful attention to speed limits on our local roads that can be narrow and winding with blind spots in some areas.
“I’m a strong believer in seatbelts, and this situation is a good example of how they do really help. Seatbelts are in vehicles for a reason and they do save lives
