Sara Drover, a grade four student at Victoria Academy in Gaultois, will be Miss February 2012 for Epilepsy Newfoundland and Labrador as her recent entry in the association’s annual calendar was selected for the 2012 project.
For the past 22 years Epilepsy NL has been selecting drawings from grade four students across the province for their annual calendar project that is used for educational and fund raising purposes.
Gail Dempsey is the Executive Director of Epilepsy NL.
Dempsey said that the association visits schools in March, which is Epilepsy Month, to talk to the students about the disease and how it can affect people. Students are asked to submit entries for the following year’s calendar based on the presentations.
Dempsey said, “What we look for mostly is the message that a student has received from the school visit.
“Sara’s picture of a small world in a large galaxy with the message that 50 million people in the world has epilepsy captures a really important point – that the disease is more common than most people realize.
“Sara’s picture depicts what I think is quite amazing for a grade four student to grasp – that this is a world wide problem which is fairly common. She’s exactly right, and that’s why her drawing was selected to represent one of the months in our 2012 calendar.”
Dempsey said that the 2012 Epilepsy NL calendars would be available to the public on June 1.
