From April 11 – 15, 2011, Newfoundland & Labrador Hydro employees of Hydro Generation were taking part in Act of Kindness Week. The purpose of this event was to demonstrate their commitment to giving back and show that they care about volunteering in the community.

On Monday, April 11th, Albert Marshall, Harold Lee, Fred Sheppard and Robert Organ performed a number of songs at the K & M Homes from 1:30 – 3:30pm.  The residents enjoyed this tremendously and sang along with the group.

On Tuesday, April 12th, Roberta Coady, Rob Bartlett, Willie McDonald and Ivan Kearley helped prepare breakfast at Bay d’Espoir Academy for the students. Learn and help with the Breakfast Program was the purpose for this event.  The Hydro Generation employees also donated $136.00 from their work recycling program.  Many thanks are extended to the employees for supporting the company’s recycling program and to the volunteers for their time and effort.

“Serving breakfast to the kids was very rewarding.   There were tots of happy children here which made us, as volunteers, feel good and worthwhile,” said Rob Bartlett.  “The kids certainly appreciate the breakfast program, and I would like to continue to volunteer for this particular program on a yearly basis.”

On April 13th, Helena Crant, Sherry Ling, and Trudy Sooley spent several hours with the Bay d’Espoir Association for Independent Living (BAIL).  They played cricket, chatted and entertained the residents during recreation period. “They are a great bunch and the ladies that were there supervising were fantastic. We are certainly hoping to do it again,” said Trudy Sooley.

Volunteers are extremely important for any community to be functional and progress.  The reward in volunteering is being able to help organizations like these and the feeling you leave with after.

“These initiatives tied in very nicely with our corporate goals, community being one on these goals and something we take great pride in. It’s rewarding to see these employees step up for this worth while cause and just glad we are able to do our part,” said Sam Rose.

The week’s events were very productive and the employees are hoping to organize events like these again next year
